There’s no progress on talks with quarterback Jeff Garcia and running back Earnest Graham on a new contract, but the team has reached an agreement with fullback B.J. Askew.
The four-year, $8.6 million deal includes a $2 million signing bonus. It is an important development because it shows the Bucs are willing to lock up core players.
Askew was entering the final year of a two-year deal he signed with the Bucs last summer.
No doubt Graham will be paying attention to the signing. He is not participating in offseason workouts while running backs Warrick Dunn and Michael Bennett are receiving the bulk of the work in practice.
Askew’s new deal, coupled with the signing of free agent center Jeff Faine, shows a continued commitment to the running game.
